There are many different villager types in Animal Crossing and almost all of them are based on real animals, but how many of them are not? On their island in New Horizons, a player is allowed to have up to 10 villagers inhabit homes and some make it their mission to group different kinds together, like having only cat villagers or the infamous ugly Animal Crossing villager island. The villagers can really make or break someone's experience in the game, and people have even gone as far as completely restarting their game in order to get rid of a villager they hated so the anticipation of going into the tent every time someone stops by is high.

With a total of 460 total villagers across the span of the different Animal Crossing games, it is understandable that not every one of them can be based on a real animal. Each villager has their own unique style and personality, but these can sometimes overlap and lose creativity. Many people have offered suggestions for new Animal Crossing villagers based on real animals and this could also open up the opportunity for new non-animal types to come into the game as well. This would also give them more villagers to assign personalities to and have more options to design homes for.

Over the last 20 years, many villagers have come and gone from the roster, but there are many that have stuck around in game after game. While there is a lot of diversity in Animal Crossing each of these villagers is boiled down to a species and personality type. Some of these species are beloved, but there are other species people really don't want to see in the next Animal Crossing game that is released. Though these villagers are technically shaped like other villagers in their type, they are not technically animals. These villagers are based on food, robots, and - interestingly enough - crafting materials.

Stitches is a loveable cub villager with a lazy personality trait. Stitches likes playing, which makes sense since he is based on a child's stuffed animal. He has multicolored patches all over his body as if sewn together and also has sewn eyes. For his home remodel, he requests a toybox and has child furniture and bright colors in his home. He also has the goal of becoming a lawyer in the future, which would make for an interesting sight to see. He is overall well-liked by players and is one that most would be happy to welcome onto their islands in Animal Crossing.

Pietro, the smug sheep villager, is one of the most controversial villagers in Animal Crossing. Though he mostly resembles a sheep, he is very clearly based on a clown more than a real-world animal. His brightly colored wool and face that is painted with a heart and red lips make the resemblance to a clown uncanny. These traits are what make him truly disliked by many players that aren't fans of clowns. He likes making crafts and has the goal to be an artist, which makes sense for his character.

Clay is a hamster villager that is designed after Japanese dogū, which are small clay figurines. He is very colorful and has a mask that goes around his eyes that looks like goggles. He is a lazy villager and has the nature hobby in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Clay's goal is to become an archaeologist and he even has his room themed to a dig site.

This villager is one of the rare ones as he only appeared in the Japanese-exclusive Animal Forest e+ if the player had his e-reader card, but that doesn't make him any less important to the list. Nindori is actually designed after the orange version of the Nintendo GameCube. Supposedly, the reason he has the horrifying hollow eyes is to resemble the controller ports, which is a horrifying thought on its own.

Nindori's designers also included markings on the side of his head to look like the grills on the console. The shirt he starts out in dons the original GameCube logo on it, which is a nice touch. He is a jock that resembles an ostrich but is also considered a robot villager, of which there are five.

The five robot villagers are Nindori, Sprocket, Ribbot, Del, and Cephalobot. Sprocket is similar to Nindori as he is a jock ostrich. His head is all mechanical, but the rest of his body appears to have feathers like a regular ostrich. Sprocket loves playing the guitar and has music as his hobby. Ribbot is a jock villager that has the look of a frog. Unlike Sprocket, Ribbot appears to be all mechanical, including his legs and torso, and even makes mechanical noises when he walks around. Oddly enough, when it rains Ribbot does not take out an umbrella harkening back to the fact he is technically one of the loveable Animal Crossing frog villagers. He loves fitness and wants to become an astronaut.

Del is one of the alligator villagers and is the cranky personality type. He is supposedly named after the Japanese battleship Yamato with references to the ship in his design and the fact that he has portholes on the side of his head. He has blue metallic coloring on the top of his head and red on his jawline, which resembles the color style on battleships. He likes fitness as a hobby and wants to become a firefighter. The last, but not least, of the robot villagers is Cephalobot. He is an octopus that is unique in the fact that he is the only smug villager in Animal Crossing that has the play hobby. His entire body is made out of silver metal and he also has glowing yellow eyes.

One odd decision that the creators of Animal Crossing made was to include villagers that appear to be made out of food. There are ten different Animal Crossing villagers that fall into this category. First up is Merengue. She is a sweet rhinoceros that looks like she is made out of a strawberry shortcake. She has a pink head that is topped with what looks like whipped cream and a strawberry for her horn. Her goal is fittingly enough to be a pastry chef and she has a normal personality type. Merengue is considered well-liked overall by fans. Patricia is another rhinoceros that has a very similar look to Merengue but is not very well known thanks to the fact she only appeared in Animal Forest e+. Patricia has a cheese look to her head but has a watermelon for her horn.

Tangy is a peppy cat villager in Animal Crossing that looks like an orange and has a leaf on her forehead. Chadder is a mouse villager that appears to be based on cheese and has the smug personality type. Carrot is a cow villager that has the normal personality type but only appeared in Animal Forest e+. She is orange-colored like a carrot and has a green tuft for her hair that looks like the green stem on a carrot. Ketchup is an adorable duck that is red with a green marking on her forehead, making her look like a tomato, hence the name Ketchup.

Zucker is an octopus and of the most popular villagers in Animal Crossing. He resembles the popular Japanese snack known as takoyaki, which is a fried ball of dough with octopus inside of it. His design is particularly fitting because of the fact that he is an octopus and looks like a ball of dough. Frita is a sheep villager with another appropriate design for her name. She appears to be made out of french fries, which are referred to as fritas or papas fritas in Spanish. Carmen is a rabbit villager that looks like ice cream topped with caramel drizzle.

The last villager in the food category is also one of the most terrifying villagers in Animal Crossing. Coco is the rabbit villager that resembles a coconut, including the holes normally found on them. She never changes expressions and had empty black eyes and a wide-open black mouth. Despite her creepiness, she is one of the most popular Animal Crossing villagers.
